Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's September 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

South Somerset Partnership School has made impressive progress in teaching early reading, with pupils enthusiastically engaging with a well-planned phonics programme tailored to their needs. Teachers have developed strong relationships with pupils and provide consistent, caring support across all school sites. The school is building an ambitious curriculum designed to help pupils understand the world around them and develop their communication skills.

Key Strengths

  • Improved early reading provision with well-trained staff teaching phonics effectively to engaged pupils
  • Effective curriculum implemented in some subject areas that builds pupils' knowledge sequentially and develops spoken language
  • Consistent approaches to behaviour management across all school sites with safe, trusting relationships between staff and pupils
  • Strong staff morale with teachers positive about leadership support for wellbeing and curriculum improvement
  • Effective governance from the Area Management Group providing oversight and scrutiny

Areas for Improvement

  • English curriculum approach is new and has not yet had sustained impact across the school
  • Some curriculum areas are still in early stages of implementation and need further staff training
  • Provision for pupils with SEND needs to be more precisely tailored to individual needs
  • Leadership has recently changed and it is too early to judge the sustained impact of governance improvements

Safeguarding

Safe and trusting relationships are in place between staff and pupils, with intensive training on social and emotional needs creating a harmonious learning environment.

South Somerset Partnership School is in special measures following a January 2025 inspection. Leaders have made progress through new leadership appointments and support, but further work is necessary before the school can exit special measures.
