Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school has made real progress in improving the learning environment. Reading support has markedly improved with trained staff and a new curriculum, and behaviour in classrooms and around the school is now calmer with clearer expectations. The school is building stronger, more positive relationships between staff and pupils, with pupils noting they feel more welcome.

Key Strengths

  • Reading support has improved markedly with staff trained to help pupils with reading difficulties and a new reading curriculum in place
  • Behaviour and conduct have improved significantly with clearer expectations, calmer classrooms, and reduced suspensions
  • School has strengthened staff relationships and rebuilt trust after previous leadership challenges
  • New teaching development programme embedding lesson routines and evidence-informed strategies
  • Support from the trust and accelerated improvement board providing effective oversight and expertise

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality improvements are in early stages with inconsistent implementation of new strategies across the school
  • Many pupils still need help with reading despite improvements, creating an ongoing challenge
  • Staff knowledge gaps remain in identifying and supporting pupils with special educational needs
  • Attendance rates remain below the national average and are a significant challenge
  • Inconsistency in how behaviour policy is applied by staff and some pupils still display negative attitudes

Sir William Stanier School was judged to have serious weaknesses in November 2024. This monitoring inspection in July 2025 found that leaders have made progress to improve the school, but more work is necessary for the serious weaknesses designation to be removed.
