Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's March 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Silverton is a strong school where staff know pupils individually and link learning to their interests. The school has made significant improvements with high expectations throughout, and disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND learn successfully alongside their peers. Children get off to a flying start in the nurturing early years provision and pupils develop a genuine love of reading through high-quality texts and a well-presented library.

Key Strengths

  • Effective, well-designed curriculum with clear identification of what pupils should learn in all subjects -
  • High priority given to reading with established, effective teaching programme that helps pupils learn to read rapidly -
  • Early years provision is nurturing and effective, with children flourishing from the moment they start -
  • Pupils with SEND are identified early and supported with individual plans that help them learn successfully -
  • Wider development promoted well through trips and visits, including residential experiences in Bristol and Bath

Areas for Improvement

  • Some inconsistencies remain in curriculum delivery - occasionally activities don't match intended learning well enough or aren't adapted sufficiently for pupils with SEND -
  • Teaching of writing doesn't ensure pupils develop the handwriting and spelling skills needed to write fluently before attempting complex writing tasks -
  • School engagement with parents has had varied results, leaving some parents less confident about improvements and changes being made

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Residential trips to Bristol and Bath, library access, The Bookery, school and federation events

Silverton Church of England Primary School is a rapidly improving school where expectations are high and pupils achieve well, particularly by the end of key stage 2. Leaders have worked determinedly to turn around a previous decline in standards and secure commitment from staff to make things better.
