What Estyn said

Estyn's report on its January 2025 inspection summarises Sennybridge C.P. School like this:

"The headteacher of Ysgol Pontsenni is an energetic and purposeful leader who, in a short time, has succeeded in creating a clear strategic direction for the school’s developments. Staff and stakeholders work together successfully to realise a shared vision which focuses on teamwork and creating a caring community. The headteacher promotes an open culture and ensures that all members of staff are given valuable professional learning opportunities that contribute firmly to their personal development. The self-evaluation process provides a clear understanding of the current situation and the priorities for improving the school. Overall, teachers use effective teaching methods and include pupils’ ideas when planning activities that interest them."

"However, staff do not provide a curriculum that ensures the appropriate development of pupils’ understanding and skills in all aspects of their learning experiences. A strong Welsh ethos is an integral part of the school, with most pupils developing increasing confidence in their ability to speak Welsh in both streams. Staff use practical teaching methods to ensure an understanding of language patterns and provide activities that support pupils to appreciate their local area and the wider world. On the whole, pupils make sound progress in their literacy, numeracy and digital skills. However, teachers’ expectations are not always high enough across the school."

"As a result, not all pupils always achieve to the best of their ability. Staff place a high priority on supporting pupils’ well-being. As a result, pupils feel safe, they appreciate that they are given effective support that builds their confidence and self- esteem well. Pupils with additional learning needs receive tailored support that facilitates their inclusion in the learning community. All staff have high expectations in terms of courtesy from pupils, which contributes firmly to their excellent behaviour across the school."

Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Raise teachers’ expectations to support pupils to achieve to the best of their ability; (2) Develop a curriculum that supports all pupils to enrich their knowledge, understanding and skills, particularly writing, constructively across both streams.
