Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Saltash Community School has made impressive improvements in creating a calm, focused learning environment where pupils behave well and behaviour rarely disrupts lessons. The school offers an ambitious curriculum across a range of subjects, backed by well-trained staff who mostly provide clear explanations and regular opportunities for pupils to practise and revisit their learning. Your child will have access to a wide variety of enriching activities, from sports and performing arts to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour expectations and routines create a calm, orderly school where learning is rarely disrupted
  • Robust reading curriculum with regular guided reading and effective catch-up support for struggling readers
  • Well-planned curriculum that helps most pupils build knowledge over time and make links between current and prior learning
  • Wide range of popular extra-curricular activities including sports, performing arts, and Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Leadership has united staff around a clear vision, creating positive momentum for improvement

Areas for Improvement

  • Some teachers do not consistently check pupils have understood before independent work, causing some pupils to struggle and fail to deepen understanding
  • Support systems for pupils with SEND need strengthening - some plans lack regular review with pupils and parents
  • Sixth-form careers guidance is not effective enough, resulting in low retention rates on some courses and limited work experience completion

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with clear systems in place to keep pupils safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs and competitions, performing arts, school production, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, reading buddies programme, sports leadership (sixth form), extended project qualification (sixth form), careers fairs, work experience

Saltash Community School is a secondary comprehensive that has improved significantly since its previous inspection. The school now provides good quality education with calm, orderly learning environments and an ambitious, carefully planned curriculum.
