Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's November 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

The school excels at supporting children in the early years with a rich, well-established curriculum that combines children's interests with important knowledge. Reading is a priority and pupils develop into confident, fluent readers who enjoy books. The school creates a warm, safe environment where pupils feel valued and have strong relationships with staff, and it provides excellent opportunities for pupils to develop their talents through sports, music like the salsa band, and leadership roles.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent early years provision in Nursery and Reception with well-trained staff and positive learning environment
  • Effective phonics programme with a developing positive reading culture where most pupils become fluent readers
  • Strong personal development provision - pupils have good knowledge of different faiths, are respectful of different cultures, and understand how to stay safe
  • Pupils are happy, safe and have warm relationships with staff who support them
  • Wide enrichment opportunities help pupils develop their talents through sporting competitions and other activities

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching of the newly redesigned curriculum is inconsistent, meaning some pupils develop gaps in their knowledge
  • Expectations are not high enough for what pupils can achieve, particularly for pupils with SEND who do not progress as well as they could
  • Behaviour management during lessons is variable with inconsistent enforcement of school rules, sometimes disrupting learning
  • Staff have not been fully trained in the new behaviour management approach
  • Governors have not rigorously held leaders to account for underperformance until recently

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with clear systems in place and pupils knowing they have trusted adults who care for them.

Extracurricular Activities

Sporting competitions, salsa band, house captain roles for older pupils

Salhouse CofE Primary School has ambitious leaders working to improve the school, but pupils have not received a high-quality education overall and too many leave unprepared for secondary school. The school's early years provision is strong, but quality across the rest of the school requires improvement.
