What This School Does Well

The school creates a warm, welcoming environment where pupils thrive both academically and personally. Teachers know their pupils well, use interesting lessons and real-life contexts to engage learners, and support disadvantaged pupils effectively to achieve good progress. The school offers wonderful enrichment opportunities including international trips, community service and specialist coaching to broaden pupils' horizons.

Key Strengths

  • Strong spiritual, moral, social and cultural development with pupils learning about different faiths, cultures and global issues
  • Effective safeguarding with regular staff training and prompt action on concerns
  • Good progress across a wide range of subjects, including for disadvantaged pupils
  • Welcoming and nurturing environment where pupils feel safe and well cared for
  • Wide range of enrichment activities including trips to France and Spain, museum visits and sports coaching

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not use assessment information consistently to provide the right level of challenge and support to pupils
  • Secondary phase leaders do not track progress rigorously in all subjects
  • In secondary subjects other than English, maths and science, pupils do not acquire deep understanding and skills needed for key stage 4
  • Project-based learning sometimes lacks depth with weak explanations and pupils copying from the internet

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with leaders and staff giving highest priority to pupils' safety, regular staff training in place, and prompt referrals to external agencies.

Extracurricular Activities

Trips to France and Spain, museum and art gallery visits, dance, judo, basketball, safe scooting scheme, swimming development, Brilliant Club for most-able pupils, Koinonia Awards with community and cultural challenges

Saint Mary Magdalene Church of England All Through School is a good school that has successfully expanded into an all-through institution serving early years to secondary pupils. The co-headteachers have led this transformation well, creating a clear vision based on 'family, faith and fellowship' across all sites.
