What This School Does Well
Safe Opportunities creates a calm, safe learning environment where young people with significant barriers can build confidence and develop practical work skills. Teachers provide highly individualised support that helps students improve their communication and social skills while gaining real work experience with local employers. The college has an excellent track record of helping students move into paid employment or further learning.
Key Strengths
- Individualised curriculums tailored to meet the needs of students facing considerable educational barriers, with two clear pathways (Step-16 course and supported internship)
- Effective workplace support through experienced job coaches and partnerships with employers across various industry sectors
- Teachers use sensitive and individualised approaches that help students gain confidence and improve social and communication skills significantly
- Most students progress to positive destinations such as paid employment or further learning
- Staff are well-qualified and receive training including trauma-informed approaches
Areas for Improvement
- Some students start supported internships before developing the necessary skills for sustained work, affecting their attendance and achievement
- Personal development curriculum requires further development
