Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Rugeley School excels at building trusting relationships and providing compassionate, high-quality support that genuinely transforms pupils' experiences of education. Staff go above and beyond to understand each child's individual needs and remove barriers to their learning and wellbeing. The school successfully re-engages pupils who have had negative experiences at other schools, helping them develop confidence, communication skills and a love of learning.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional pastoral support and staff empathy that helps pupils manage their emotions and build confidence
  • Highly inclusive approach with thorough understanding of pupils' individual needs and well-designed transition programmes
  • Strong focus on life skills, independence and preparation for adulthood including Duke of Edinburgh Award, forest school and work experience
  • Effective behaviour management using functional assessments and evidence-based interventions, significantly reducing physical interventions
  • Comprehensive post-16 curriculum focused on sustainable positive outcomes for students

Areas for Improvement

  • Some inconsistency in teaching quality due to significant number of new staff - not all teachers give pupils enough time to process thinking or match work closely to next steps
  • Some pupils show inconsistency in letter formation and accurate use of punctuation in writing
  • A small number of pupils still require regular intervention and lose learning time as a result
  • Leaders recognise need for further staff training in some specific curriculum areas

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has created an open and positive culture of safeguarding where all legal requirements are met and pupils are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Duke of Edinburgh Award, forest school, work experience, AQA accredited units, sports and leisure activities, snack time support roles

Rugeley School is a special school that provides high-quality care and support to pupils with complex needs, successfully re-engaging many pupils in education and preparing them well for their next stage. The school creates a calm, inclusive environment where relationships are central to everything the school does.
