Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Roman Way is a caring, family-like school where pupils thrive emotionally and feel genuinely valued. The school excels at supporting its most vulnerable learners, including those with special educational needs and disadvantaged pupils, through personalized support and high expectations. Reading is taught very well using a systematic phonics approach, and the school creates a positive, respectful community where pupils are kind to each other.

Key Strengths

  • Strong inclusive approach with excellent support for pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils
  • Effective teaching of phonics and reading with systematic phonics instruction
  • Positive behaviour and attendance, with kind and respectful relationships throughout the school
  • High staff morale and considerate leadership that prioritizes wellbeing
  • Clear safeguarding culture where pupils feel safe and concerns are acted upon quickly

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many pupils not secure in knowledge and skills by end of Year 6, particularly in wider curriculum
  • Some pupils retain errors and misconceptions because staff don't always check understanding before introducing new knowledge
  • Wider curriculum not implemented as effectively as core subjects
  • Vocabulary development opportunities in early years not yet used to full potential
  • Some activity choices in wider curriculum don't consistently build on prior knowledge

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sporting clubs, inter-school competitions and events, artistic opportunities, musical tuition, school council with official polling equipment, educational visits tailored to pupil needs

Roman Way Primary School is a welcoming, inclusive school where pupils feel safe and valued. However, too many pupils are not yet secure in the knowledge and skills needed for their next stage of education, particularly in the wider curriculum.
