Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The primary phase of the school provides a strong foundation for younger pupils with effective curriculum planning and teaching that helps them build reading skills and manage their emotions well. Teachers in the primary phase understand pupils' individual needs and adapt their teaching appropriately. However, this positive picture does not extend to the secondary phase, where the quality of education and behaviour management are significantly weaker.

Key Strengths

  • Primary phase pupils benefit from a well-planned curriculum taught effectively with good progress in reading
  • Primary phase teachers understand and meet pupils' SEND needs well, helping them achieve and manage their emotions
  • Early reading support in the primary phase is effective, with younger pupils learning to read with fluency and understanding

Areas for Improvement

  • Secondary phase lacks subject curriculums with identified knowledge pupils should learn, and teacher expectations are too low
  • Safeguarding arrangements are not effective, placing pupils at risk - concerns are not tracked or acted upon systematically
  • Poor behaviour in secondary phase is frequent and escalating, with staff using restraint often without proper training or reflection
  • Secondary pupils have low attendance with no strategic support to improve it
  • Pupils are not taught how to keep safe or about other cultures and protected characteristics as required by law

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are not effective and place pupils at increased risk of harm - the school fails to track patterns in incidents, does not know which pupils are known to children's social care, and has not acted on three local authority safeguarding review recommendations.

Extracurricular Activities

Music

Roaches School is a special needs school that has declined significantly from its previous Good rating. The school is now rated Inadequate across all areas, with serious concerns about safeguarding, behaviour management, and the quality of education for secondary-age pupils.
