What This School Does Well

Ripple Primary School excels at supporting pupils from diverse backgrounds, particularly those new to English who make rapid progress with tailored support. The Early Years provision gets children off to a strong start, and the school's mathematics teaching has driven significant improvements with pupils now achieving average standards. Teaching assistants and specialist staff provide excellent individual support for pupils with additional needs.

Key Strengths

  • Achievement in mathematics has improved rapidly and standards are now average
  • Early Years (Nursery and Reception) provides a strong start with good progress
  • Excellent support for pupils learning English as an additional language who make rapid progress
  • Specialist teaching assistants provide good individual support for pupils with special needs
  • Inclusion team offers outstanding support to families facing difficult circumstances

Areas for Improvement

  • Reading and writing standards are well below average and too few pupils exceed expected progress
  • Teaching is inconsistent - not enough good teaching overall and work is sometimes too easy for more-able pupils
  • Phonics teaching is not always accurate and marking doesn't consistently show pupils how to improve
  • Pupils don't write extended pieces regularly across different subjects
  • Leadership and governance need to drive improvement faster and hold school leaders more firmly to account

Ripple Primary School is a much larger than average primary school serving a diverse pupil population with high levels of English as an additional language. The school requires improvement overall, having declined from a Good rating, primarily due to inconsistent teaching quality and below-average standards in reading and writing.
