What This School Does Well
This school excels at helping pupils who have lost faith in education to reconnect with learning. Staff create a family-like atmosphere where pupils feel genuinely cared for and understood, leading most to improve their attendance and develop more positive attitudes. The school successfully equips pupils with qualifications and life skills to transition into mainstream education, employment or training.
Key Strengths
- Strong focus on building positive relationships and creating a sense of belonging, helping pupils feel safe and valued
- Effective support for attendance, with most pupils increasing their attendance rates considerably from their starting points
- Ambitious curriculum including GCSEs and vocational courses, with pupils gaining qualifications for next steps in education, employment or training
- Comprehensive approach to identifying and supporting pupils' barriers to wellbeing and learning
- Excellent enrichment activities including theatre and museum trips, boxing, cooking, and music performances
Areas for Improvement
- Some assessment checks on pupils' understanding do not closely match what has been taught, making it harder to identify knowledge gaps precisely
- Inconsistent use of strategies by some staff to help pupils access learning, which affects progress for a few pupils in some subjects
- Need to refine assessment approaches to better track pupil understanding
Safeguarding
Safeguarding standards are met. The school has created an open and positive culture of safeguarding where all legal requirements are fulfilled and staff actively identify, act upon and manage concerns.
