What This School Does Well
Plympton Academy has worked hard to turn things around after a difficult period. The school now has strong leadership, fair behaviour policies, and special support for pupils who are behind with reading. Staff morale has improved greatly, and the school is working effectively with families to help pupils do better.
Key Strengths
- Clear improvements to the reading curriculum with a sequential phonics programme for younger pupils who need support
- Significant reduction in staff absence and parent complaints, creating a more stable and positive school environment
- Strong progress on attendance with robust systems in place and a dedicated attendance coordinator reducing persistent absence
- Leadership team is stable and well-respected by staff, with clear behaviour and absence policies now applied consistently
Areas for Improvement
- Teaching methods need to be more consistently effective across the school - not all staff yet fully understand how to deliver the curriculum most effectively
- Published exam outcomes do not yet reflect the improvements being made
- Overall attendance levels remain too low despite improvements
- Staff need better professional development to ensure they understand both what to teach and how to teach it most effectively
Plympton Academy is a school not in a category of concern that has made progress since its previous inspection in March 2024, though some aspects still need further improvement. Recent leadership changes and trust support have helped stabilise the school and address previous concerns.
