What This School Does Well

Your child will thrive in a caring environment where kindness, respect and resilience are central values. Teachers know pupils well and have high expectations for both behaviour and learning. The school excels at teaching reading from the start, with almost all pupils becoming confident, independent readers by the end of key stage 1.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent phonics teaching means almost all pupils read independently and fluently by end of key stage 1 - Strong subject knowledge from teachers who present information clearly, especially helping pupils with English as an additional language and those with SEND - Coherent, well-designed curriculum across almost all subjects from early years onwards - Warm, positive relationships between staff and pupils, with high expectations of both learning and behaviour - Effective support for pupils with SEND through inclusive approach and sensitive behaviour management

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing standards in subjects other than English are not as strong because the school does not insist on the same level of accuracy in handwriting, punctuation and spelling across all subjects - Too few opportunities for pupils to take on meaningful responsibilities and leadership roles, limiting their active contribution to the school community

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with clear systems in place to keep pupils safe and supported.

Extracurricular Activities

Lunchtime clubs including yoga, gardening and choir; regular trips (e.g. beach visits); visiting speakers; local events; sustainability projects

Petersfield Infant School is a Good rated school where pupils are confident, enthusiastic and achieve well across subjects. The school has improved significantly since its previous inspection and provides a broad, rich curriculum with strong phonics teaching and high expectations for learning.
