From Ofsted's November 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

This school provides a warm, welcoming environment where children feel happy, safe, and valued by staff. The school has invested heavily in early reading, ensuring all children become confident readers with tailored support for those who need it. Pupils with additional needs receive excellent, skilled support with staff working closely with families to meet individual needs.

Key Strengths

  • Strong early reading programme with well-trained staff ensuring children develop into confident and fluent readers
  • Excellent support for pupils with SEND, with staff making necessary adaptations and working closely with families and external professionals
  • Rich and engaging Reception Year activities that help younger children get off to a positive start
  • Warm school environment where pupils show positive attitudes, behave well in lessons, and feel safe and happy

Areas for Improvement

  • Some curriculum subjects lack clearly defined knowledge content and teaching sequences, leading to gaps in pupils' learning
  • Staff sometimes select activities that don't fully implement the intended curriculum, preventing pupils from developing deep subject knowledge
  • Behaviour expectations are not consistently enforced during unstructured times like breaks, unlike the purposeful atmosphere in formal lessons
  • Some pupils, including those with SEND and children in early years, need better support to self-regulate and manage their own behaviour

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Dance clubs, singing clubs, sports clubs, science projects with local laboratory, archaeological dig, rock band music project

Ormskirk West End School is a warm and inviting primary school where pupils enjoy positive relationships with staff and feel safe and happy. However, some aspects of the school's work may not be as strong as at the previous inspection, with weaknesses in curriculum development meaning some pupils do not achieve as well as they should.
