Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Orgill Primary School excels at creating a caring, nurturing atmosphere where children thrive and behave well. The early years provision is particularly strong, with children developing quickly in language, independence and confidence. Staff provide effective support for pupils who need additional help, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, ensuring they can access the curriculum and make progress.

Key Strengths

  • Strong safeguarding culture with open reporting and effective management of concerns
  • Excellent early years provision with children developing independence, language skills and confidence
  • Well-embedded behaviour routines and positive relationships that create a calm, orderly learning environment
  • Effective support for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND through additional resources and adjusted teaching
  • Rich programme of personal development including trips, visits, responsibility roles and after-school clubs

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many Year 6 pupils, particularly disadvantaged pupils, lack the knowledge and skills needed for secondary school transition
  • Curriculum improvements came too late for some older pupils in key stage 2 who have significant knowledge gaps
  • Some lesson activities are not well-designed, meaning pupils don't learn and retain important knowledge as effectively
  • A small number of governors are relatively new and still developing full understanding of statutory obligations

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met with an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified, acted upon and managed.

Extracurricular Activities

Trips to museums and exhibitions, Mini Police, after-school sports clubs, gardening club, secondary school career visits

Orgill Primary School provides a warm, nurturing environment where pupils enjoy coming to school and behave well. While recent curriculum improvements are benefiting younger pupils and those in lower key stage 2, some older pupils in Year 6 lack the knowledge and skills needed for secondary school.
