What This School Does Well

Nutley is known for its caring ethos and strong relationships between pupils and staff. The school excels at supporting all children's wellbeing and personal development, with excellent pastoral care that helps pupils thrive. Leaders are ambitious for every pupil and work hard to remove barriers to learning, ensuring disadvantaged pupils and those with special needs receive the right support.

Key Strengths

  • Warm, nurturing relationships and highly positive pupil behaviour throughout the school
  • Strong pastoral care with 'The Nest' providing expert emotional support
  • Excellent attendance rates with effective support for vulnerable pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Mathematics standards have been inconsistently high, with some pupils below average in Year 6 and the Year 4 multiplication check
  • Teaching does not always reflect what pupils already know, leading to work that is sometimes too easy or too hard for individuals
  • Variation in the quality of phonics and writing teaching has left some pupils with gaps in letter formation and spelling
  • Feedback to pupils is not consistently used to address misconceptions across all classes

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified and managed.

Extracurricular Activities

Educational visits to museums, restaurants, theatre performances, outdoor adventure activities, career development days, worship leader roles, school council roles

Nutley Church of England Primary School is a caring, inclusive school with strong attendance, behaviour and personal development. The school has identified that standards in mathematics and the consistency of teaching in some areas need improvement.
