Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Your child will be safe at Nether Green and will enjoy coming to school - behaviour is good, attendance is above average, and pupils feel secure. Reading is a real strength, with pupils encouraged to enjoy a wide range of literature. The school is particularly strong at supporting pupils with special educational needs, who make excellent progress.

Key Strengths

  • Good behaviour across the school with above-average attendance and pupils feeling safe and secure
  • Some good teaching, particularly in Year 6, where pupils make strong progress
  • Above-average attainment by the end of Year 6, especially in reading
  • Pupils with special educational needs in the resourced provision make consistently good progress
  • The newly strengthened governing body is helping drive school improvement

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality is inconsistent - teachers' expectations are not always high enough and activities are not adjusted quickly enough during lessons
  • Too few pupils, particularly in Year 3 and 4, make better than expected progress in writing and mathematics
  • Marking is inconsistent and some pupils do not receive clear guidance on how to improve their work
  • Pupils have limited opportunities to practise maths skills in open-ended investigations
  • School improvement plans lack precision in focusing on how pupils will make rapid progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding measures are in place and well-managed, with good systems for managing behaviour and bullying incidents being rare.

Extracurricular Activities

Wide range of clubs, residential trips, outstanding orchestra

Nether Green Junior School is a larger-than-average primary school that requires improvement. While pupils' behaviour is good and reading progress is strong, inconsistent teaching quality and variable progress in writing and mathematics need to be addressed.
