Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Moorlands Junior School successfully motivates pupils through creative themed learning weeks and a broad, interesting curriculum. Teachers work pupils hard and the school has taken effective action to improve achievement in writing and mathematics following previous disappointing results. The school provides excellent enrichment opportunities including music, sports, and clubs that support pupils' personal development and self-confidence.

Key Strengths

  • Introduced themed learning weeks that motivate pupils and help them apply skills across subjects
  • Improved leadership with subject leaders receiving training and developing action plans with regular progress checks
  • Wide range of enrichment activities including school choir, orchestra, and weekly achievement and enrichment afternoons
  • Strong safeguarding culture with clear procedures and effective oversight by governors
  • Current pupils making strong progress in writing and mathematics after targeted staff training and support

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment and tracking system for subjects other than English and mathematics is still in early stages, so subject leaders lack complete overview of pupil progress
  • Some school improvement actions lack clear purpose and evaluations don't directly relate to pupil achievement
  • Need to continue strategies to ensure sustained progress in writing and mathematics
  • Teachers must more consistently provide challenging work for the most able pupils in writing and mathematics

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school has thorough arrangements in place, staff are knowledgeable about procedures and alert to signs of abuse, pupils feel safe, and governors provide strong oversight.

Extracurricular Activities

School choir, school orchestra, achievement and enrichment afternoons (origami, fitness training), football club, netball club, science club, film club

Moorlands Junior School continues to be good, maintaining quality education since the last inspection in 2014. The leadership team has successfully addressed previous areas for improvement and taken swift action to boost achievement in writing and mathematics.
