What This School Does Well

Moons Moat is a genuinely inclusive school where every child is known and cared for as an individual. The school excels at supporting children with additional needs and those facing barriers to learning, with tailored support helping all pupils progress. Teachers use a well-planned curriculum with strong phonics teaching, and the school enriches learning through trips and outdoor spaces where children develop confidence and independence.

Key Strengths

  • Strong inclusive practice with well-established systems to identify and support pupils with barriers to learning, including a dedicated 'Launch Pad' provision for specialist support
  • Well-sequenced broad curriculum based on the national curriculum with effective phonics teaching and reading support
  • Excellent pastoral care and personal development programme helping pupils feel safe and building their confidence
  • Effective leadership with clear understanding of school strengths and areas for improvement, supported by committed governors

Areas for Improvement

  • Attendance remains below national average, including for pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, with too many persistently absent
  • Early years provision is inconsistent - adults do not always support children with careful questioning and planning does not always focus on key knowledge
  • Behaviour management approaches lack consistency across staff, leading to pockets of poor pupil behaviour
  • Some pupils in early years do not achieve as well as they could, affecting their readiness for Key Stage 1

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Educational trips including Year 4 residential trip, break and lunchtime clubs, forest area for nature learning and building independence skills, pupil leadership roles such as digital leaders and reading leaders

Moons Moat First School is an inclusive first school where pupils are safe and generally achieve well in their learning. Leaders have an ambitious vision focused on the local community and have made improvements in curriculum delivery and support for pupils with additional needs.
