What This School Does Well

This is a caring school where children feel safe and happy. Staff know families well and create a nurturing environment. The school excels at teaching reading and provides pupils with a broad curriculum that builds knowledge carefully over time, alongside enriching activities that make learning memorable and fun.

Key Strengths

  • Reading is expertly taught with a strong phonics programme, and pupils become confident, fluent readers
  • Staff have strong subject knowledge and create opportunities for pupils to discuss ideas and think deeply
  • Pupils with special educational needs are identified swiftly and receive individualised support to flourish
  • The school provides a wide range of enriching activities including sports, music, woodland activities and residential visits
  • Pupils show positive attitudes to learning, behave well and follow school rules sensibly

Areas for Improvement

  • Checking what pupils have learned is not applied consistently across all subjects, meaning some gaps in understanding are not identified quickly enough
  • The school does not have robust systems to evaluate how well the curriculum is working, so leaders cannot clearly identify where further improvements are needed

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created an open, positive culture around safeguarding that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs, music performances at church and community events, woodland activities, residential visits, outdoor activities

Mapperley CofE Controlled Primary School is a happy and safe place where pupils enjoy strong relationships with caring staff and benefit from a broad, ambitious curriculum. The school has improved significantly since its previous inspection and now provides a nurturing environment where pupils achieve well.
