Longshaw Infant School is exceptional at supporting all children to succeed, no matter what challenges they face at home. Staff know every pupil well and work tirelessly to help disadvantaged children and those with additional needs keep up with their learning. The school creates a warm, caring atmosphere where children are enthusiastic about learning and behaviour is respectful.
Key Strengths
- Exceptional support for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND - they progress well and achieve in line with other pupils
- Strong phonics teaching from Reception through Year 1, with pupils reaching national average standards
- Warm, nurturing atmosphere where pupils feel safe and staff know them extremely well
- Effective leadership that uses pupil premium funding carefully to help disadvantaged pupils catch up
- Successful work reducing persistent absence, particularly for vulnerable pupils
Areas for Improvement
- A small number of lessons are not carefully designed, making it harder for pupils to explain what they have learned
- Adults sometimes don't allow enough time for pupils to contribute their thoughts during school council discussions, limiting their ability to help shape school decisions
