What This School Does Well

Long Lane creates a truly welcoming environment where every child is valued and has something to offer. The school excels at teaching reading and mathematics through skilled, well-structured lessons, while also nurturing pupils' character and confidence. Teachers have high expectations, quickly spot who needs extra support, and ensure all children - including those who find learning difficult - achieve well.

Key Strengths

  • Ambitious and unique curriculum with clear intent, particularly strong improvements in reading and mathematics
  • Skilled teaching with good subject knowledge and high expectations; teachers quickly identify pupils needing extra help

  • Positive behaviour and relationships throughout the school with low-level disruption

Areas for Improvement

  • Mathematics curriculum refinement not yet complete - some pupils do not apply mathematical knowledge to problem-solving and reasoning sufficiently well
  • In a few wider curriculum subjects, the precise knowledge pupils need to learn is not clearly defined, preventing some pupils from building effectively on prior learning

Extracurricular Activities

Sports ambassadors, leadership roles including whole-school assembly preparation, physical education curriculum with responsibility-building activities
