What This School Does Well

This school creates a caring, inclusive environment where children thrive and are proud to be part of the school community. Teachers explain new learning clearly and check pupils' understanding regularly, helping most pupils build secure knowledge. The school excels at supporting children with additional needs and has created a strong reading culture where children develop a genuine love of books.

Key Strengths

  • Strong emphasis on reading with a consistent phonics programme that helps pupils read accurately and confidently by end of Year 2
  • Excellent support for pupils with SEND, with carefully considered adaptations allowing them to access the same curriculum as their peers
  • Well-designed programme for pupils' wider development, including health, safety and transition support to junior school
  • Clear behaviour expectations ('ready, respectful and safe') with individualised support for those who struggle, creating a calm learning environment
  • Strong leadership with a clear shared vision between trust leaders and governors

Areas for Improvement

  • A small number of subjects have only recently had their curriculum refined, leaving gaps in prior knowledge for some Year 1 and 2 pupils
  • Teaching of pencil grip and letter formation is not prioritised sufficiently, slowing progress in early writing skills
  • Need to address gaps in pupils' knowledge from previous curriculums so pupils can deepen understanding over time

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with leaders creating an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

School council involvement in school logo design, ethos group fundraising for local food bank and school in Uganda, sports leaders supporting Reception children at lunchtime

Leyland Methodist Infant School is an inclusive and happy school where pupils feel well cared for and are eager to learn. The school has developed a well-ordered curriculum with particular strength in reading, though some subjects need further refinement.
