What This School Does Well
This is a genuinely inclusive school where every child is valued and supported to thrive. Teachers provide consistently good teaching with a particular strength in mathematics, and the school has created a warm, welcoming environment where staff care deeply for pupils and families. Senior leaders are outstanding practitioners who model excellent teaching and provide strong support to help all pupils make excellent progress.
Key Strengths
- Strong leadership that has driven significant improvements, particularly in mathematics where teaching is high-quality across all year groups
- Effective support for disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils who make up a significant proportion of the school
- Rigorous monitoring systems for teaching and learning with consistently good teaching throughout
- Outstanding teaching from senior leaders who work with identified groups to ensure best progress
- Inclusive school culture where pupils feel safe, valued and happy, with positive relationships between staff and families
Areas for Improvement
- Attendance rates remain above national averages, particularly for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs - this is the school's biggest challenge
- Tracking of pupils' progress in subjects beyond English and mathematics is not as rigorous, leaving pupils and parents unclear about wider curriculum progress
- Need to continue strengthening provision in early years to help children with low starting points reach good levels of development before key stage 1
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective. Staff have strong training and know pupils extremely well, enabling them to spot risks early, with a highly experienced pastoral manager working closely with families and external agencies.
Leigh Central Primary School continues to be judged as good. The leadership team has maintained high quality education since the last inspection in 2012, creating a caring family ethos with high expectations where all pupils are valued and supported effectively.
