Larkspur has a friendly, happy atmosphere where pupils behave well and respect each other. The headteacher provides strong leadership with clear focus on improvement, and teaching is developing well with increasingly good progress in reading and mathematics. Children get off to a strong start in the early years, and the school provides memorable learning experiences through visits and real-world connections.
Key Strengths
- Good leadership from the headteacher with clear priorities for improvement and strong team ethos among staff
- By the end of Year 6, pupils reach standards close to the national average in reading, writing and mathematics, with reading progress exceeding national average
- Good early years provision with children well cared for and feeling safe in Nursery and Reception classes
- Pupils' good behaviour and respect for each other creates a happy, friendly school environment
- Well-planned curriculum that interests pupils through visits, visitors and independent research, fostering good spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
Areas for Improvement
- Pupils' learning and progress slows in lower Key Stage 2 because teachers' knowledge of pupils' learning needs is not accurate enough
- Teaching and learning are not consistently good in all classes, with pupils not always challenged to do their best
- Teachers' marking does not always help to improve pupils' work effectively
- Assessments of pupils' needs need to be more accurate so teachers can plan for the right range of ability levels
- Monitoring of teachers' marking and feedback needs to be more rigorous
