Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Langdale CofE School excels at making all pupils feel cared for and safe, with warm relationships between staff and pupils. The school does particularly well in teaching early reading, giving most children a strong foundation in phonics. The school is also very effective at supporting pupils with additional needs and disadvantaged pupils through specialist advice, targeted activities, and ensuring they can participate in all enrichment opportunities.

Key Strengths

  • Strong early reading programme with effective phonics teaching
  • Effective safeguarding culture where pupils feel safe and concerns are actively managed
  • Good support for pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils through targeted resources and specialist advice
  • Warm, caring relationships between staff and pupils
  • Broad and balanced curriculum with enrichment activities accessible to all pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils do not retain knowledge well and struggle to connect new learning to what they have learned before
  • Inconsistent behaviour expectations and teaching approaches across the school
  • Gaps in pupils' handwriting, spelling, grammar and number skills that do not close quickly enough
  • Early years curriculum does not clearly identify what children should learn, leaving some unprepared for Year 1
  • Governors have not provided sufficient challenge on curriculum quality or academic achievement, and have failed to address previous inspection recommendations

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders and governors have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Arts, sport, science, outdoor activities, bushcraft, gardening, trips and residential visits

Langdale CofE School requires significant improvement overall, though safeguarding standards are met and the school has strengths in early reading and inclusion support.
