Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Lamerton is a warm, family-friendly village school where children are happy, safe and well-behaved. The school excels at enriching pupils' personal development through visits, trips and community links that broaden their horizons and help them understand different cultures and career opportunities. Parents particularly appreciate the staff's support in helping children follow their interests and passions.

Key Strengths

  • Strong personal development and wellbeing provision with excellent opportunities for pupils to develop respect, understanding of British values, and awareness of their community and beyond
  • High attendance rates and generally positive behaviour, with rare incidents of bullying
  • Teaching of phonics and mathematics is a strength of the school

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum and teaching not planned with enough precision - pupils of different abilities often complete the same work, limiting challenge for advanced learners
  • Assessment inconsistencies mean mistakes are not always identified and corrected, and teaching is not adapted to address gaps in pupils' knowledge
  • Handwriting teaching lacks rigour, resulting in weaker quality written work across the curriculum
  • Support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities is not precise enough and not always well matched to their needs

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified and managed, ensuring pupils are safe and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Gardening club, athletics club, cricket club, residential visits to outdoor education centre with climbing and raft-building, trips to Bristol, Plymouth, museums, places of worship, Buckland Abbey, and the zoo, visits from local Member of Parliament, farmers, doctors and midwives, school council, cake sales, art competitions

Lamerton CofE Primary Academy is a village school where pupils are safe, happy and attend regularly with high attendance rates. However, while published outcomes have been historically positive, current pupils do not progress as well as they should through the curriculum due to weaknesses in teaching and curriculum design.
