What This School Does Well

This school creates a truly inclusive environment where every child feels they belong and are celebrated. Teachers know families well, provide excellent support for pupils with additional needs, and have created a positive, calm atmosphere where children are happy to attend. The school's values of 'love, learn and shine' are woven throughout daily life, supported by strong leadership and staff who genuinely care about pupil wellbeing.

Key Strengths

  • High attendance rates with effective support for families to overcome barriers to regular attendance
  • Strong behaviour culture where pupils are respectful, kind, and celebrate school values through Friday reward assemblies
  • Well-designed curriculum with clear knowledge endpoints, particularly improved mathematics teaching focusing on multiplication and times tables
  • Excellent inclusion and SEND support with bespoke targets and close progress monitoring
  • Positive staff culture where teachers feel valued, supported, and have manageable workloads

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing achievement lags behind other curriculum areas - curriculum revisions are underway but impact is not yet consistent across pupils' work
  • Teachers do not always identify and address misconceptions in lessons, meaning some pupils move to new learning before consolidating prior knowledge
  • Early years staff could maximise more high-quality interactions to extend children's learning further

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met with an open and positive culture of safeguarding where all legal requirements are fulfilled and concerns are actively managed.

Extracurricular Activities

Gymnastics clubs, football clubs, reading clubs, bushcraft skills, outside learning experiences

Kirkburton Church of England Voluntary Aided First School is a welcoming and caring school where pupils are happy and experience a strong sense of belonging. The school has secure leadership, effective teaching, and strong support systems for all learners.
