What This School Does Well
The school has made real progress in behaviour and atmosphere, creating a calm learning environment where pupils feel safe and happy. Reading support is a particular strength, helping struggling readers improve quickly. The school offers pupils lots of chances to develop as young people through clubs, performances, work experience, and taking on real responsibilities around school.
Key Strengths
- Behaviour has improved significantly with clear rewards and consequences, and suspensions are falling
- Reading support is effective, with weak readers quickly identified and given targeted help
- Personal development programme prepares pupils well for life, including discussions about moral issues and anti-bullying culture
- Attendance is improving through active monitoring and support like the re-engagement room
- Pupils have many enrichment opportunities and take on meaningful responsibilities
Areas for Improvement
- Curriculum planning lacks precision in some subjects, leading to pupils repeating work instead of deepening understanding
- Assessment methods do not accurately identify what pupils know, so teaching doesn't match pupils' starting points
- Leadership monitoring systems are weak, making it hard for senior staff and governors to track progress
- Pupils with SEND face the same curriculum weaknesses as their peers
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective with a positive culture that puts pupils' safety first.
Extracurricular Activities
Sports, drama, music performances, The Old Railway Farm, subject ambassador scheme, student council, clubs, guest speakers, work visits, careers events
Kingsmead Academy is working to improve after a period of leadership changes. The school has a clear vision and is making progress, but some improvements are still settling in and pupils are not yet achieving as well as they should across all subjects.
