Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

This school excels at teaching reading through high-quality phonics instruction and creating a love of books through creative incentives like OWL badges. The school provides an excellent personal development programme where all pupils learn to swim, enjoy forest activities and develop leadership skills. Staff are approachable and well-supported, and parents are positive about the education their children receive.

Key Strengths

  • Phonics is well taught with high-quality training and pupils become confident, fluent readers who enjoy reading
  • Behaviour has improved significantly following the revised behaviour policy, which is implemented consistently well
  • Strong personal development programme including swimming, forest activities and outdoor learning that develop pupils' confidence and resilience
  • Staff quickly identify pupils with SEND and most achieve well
  • Trips and enrichment activities enhance the curriculum, including visits to science museums and large-scale performances

Areas for Improvement

  • In some newly developed subject curriculums, teachers' checks on what pupils have learned are not fully effective, so pupils sometimes lack the knowledge needed to learn new content
  • Some staff do not have the skills to accurately measure progress for a small number of pupils with SEND, affecting their progression in learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Science museum visits, Year 6 residential, large-scale choir performance, swimming, forest activities, outdoor team building, leadership opportunities

Kelvedon Hatch Community Primary School is a warm, friendly and welcoming school where pupils know each other well and follow the school values of kindness, honesty, confidence, perseverance and safety. Staff have high expectations of pupils' learning, and pupils make positive strides in their education.
