Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Oakfield helps pupils who have struggled in mainstream schools to settle, learn and make good progress in a short time. The school creates a calm, supportive environment where behaviour improves and pupils develop better social skills. With strong connections to pupils' home schools, most successfully return to mainstream education or move on to appropriate specialist placements.

Key Strengths

  • Daily 'praise time' effectively motivates pupils and encourages them to achieve success
  • Teaching is consistently good with teachers and support staff creating a positive, calm and nurturing environment
  • Staff manage behaviour effectively, helping pupils learn to make better choices and control their responses
  • Recent focus on literacy has improved reading, with writing and maths also developing well
  • Strong links with mainstream schools ensure pupils' work is planned jointly to maintain continuity

Areas for Improvement

  • Some pupils are not fully stretched and lesson plans do not consistently include personalised goals for individual pupils
  • Not enough pupils check their own work or understand how to improve it
  • The new system to check pupils' progress does not yet fully analyse whether all pupils are learning to their full potential

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils say they feel safe in the unit, most enjoy their experience and trust staff to help them, with parents agreeing.

Extracurricular Activities

Reading den, use of local sporting facilities, reward visits, cookery lessons, transitions support with vocational or training agencies for Year 9 pupils

This is a good school that provides for pupils at risk of permanent exclusion or who have been permanently excluded from mainstream schools, operating across two sites (Oakfield for ages 11-14 and Jigsaw for ages 4-11). Pupils make good progress in their learning, social and behavioural skills during their time at the unit.
