What This School Does Well

Ivybridge Primary School excels at creating a calm, peaceful environment where pupils behave outstandingly well and show respect for each other regardless of background. Teachers are enthusiastic and skilled at asking challenging questions, and the school provides strong support for all learners including those with special needs and those learning English as an additional language. The curriculum includes wonderful trips and activities, such as a Year 6 residential visit to Dorset, to enrich pupils' learning.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding behaviour and personal development - pupils are extremely polite, work well together, and bullying is rare
  • Good progress in writing and mathematics, with strong support for pupils with special educational needs and English as an additional language
  • Teachers have good subject knowledge and ask challenging questions to extend pupils' thinking
  • Well-developed spiritual, moral, social and cultural education with strong understanding of different faiths and beliefs
  • Effective safeguarding arrangements with good quality staff training

Areas for Improvement

  • Reading progress is slower than in other subjects, especially for the most able disadvantaged pupils who need more challenging texts
  • Communication with parents needs improvement - some parents feel the school is not accessible or welcoming, particularly those from different backgrounds
  • Progress in subjects other than reading, writing and mathematics is not monitored thoroughly enough
  • Teaching of reading skills is not checked as carefully as other subjects, so teachers don't always get specific feedback to improve
  • Some pupils are not taking reading books home for additional practice

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with good quality staff training, thorough recruitment checks, and strong procedures to keep pupils safe from harm including risks of radicalisation and internet safety.

Extracurricular Activities

Year 6 residential visit to Dorset, visits from fire and rescue service, range of physical activities, educational and social experiences throughout the school year

Ivybridge Primary School is a good school that has maintained teaching quality despite recent leadership changes. Pupils receive a good quality of education with outstanding behaviour and strong support for diverse learners.
