What This School Does Well
Ibstock School creates a supportive and caring environment where most pupils enjoy learning and experience positive relationships with staff. The school has recently strengthened its curriculum design and is introducing targeted support to help pupils improve their reading and achieve better outcomes. Pupils have excellent opportunities to broaden their horizons through trips abroad, sports, and activities like the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Key Strengths
- Well-designed and carefully sequenced curriculum that clearly outlines what pupils need to learn
- Positive relationships between staff and pupils, with staff providing care and inspiration
- Improving behaviour overall, with pupils increasingly responding well to teacher-led activities
- Wide range of extra-curricular activities including trips, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and sports
- Recent reading support is beginning to make a positive difference for pupils who need it
Areas for Improvement
- Curriculum is not taught effectively enough - pupils sometimes disengage and do not achieve as well as they should
- Needs of pupils with SEND are not consistently met, with adaptations not closely matched to their requirements
- Behaviour management strategies are applied inconsistently, causing some disruption to learning
- Attendance rates remain too high, particularly among disadvantaged pupils
- Personal development programme is in early stages with pupils lacking confidence about British values and understanding of different faiths
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has appropriate systems in place to keep pupils safe.
Extracurricular Activities
Trips to Belgium and Berlin, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, sporting activities, variety of clubs
Ibstock School is a secondary comprehensive that requires improvement across all key areas. The school has recently undergone leadership changes and is working to implement improvements, but these changes are too recent to have fully taken effect.
