What This School Does Well

The school has made improvements to its safeguarding policy and behaviour management, which are now implemented effectively. First aid provision is a particular strength, with well-trained staff including paediatric first aiders. However, these improvements are undermined by serious failures in building maintenance and safety, which put pupils at risk.

Key Strengths

  • Behaviour policy has been reviewed and is now implemented effectively
  • First aid provision is well-managed with multiple trained first aiders including paediatric specialists
  • Safeguarding policy now meets requirements and is available on the school's website
  • Admission procedures and registers for identity and right-to-work checks have been improved

Areas for Improvement

  • Childcare disqualification checks on staff and by association have not been completed
  • Building maintenance and safety systems are inadequate with unresolved issues including water damage and electrical hazards
  • Fire safety concerns remain unaddressed, including water damage to smoke detectors
  • Risk assessments do not cover shared use of premises or use by other schools during the school day
  • References from recruitment are not consistently using the school's template or assessing suitability to work with children

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are not effective - while the safeguarding policy now meets requirements, critical checks on staff disqualifications and proper referral procedures to the Disclosure and Barring Service have not been implemented, and staff lack formal training on radicalisation and extremism.

Hyland House School is an independent school in Tottenham, London that was inspected on 16 June 2016 as a progress monitoring visit. The school has failed to meet independent school standards, with significant concerns remaining in safeguarding, health and safety, and premises maintenance.
