Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Honiton Community College has successfully raised expectations and achievement for all pupils through strong curriculum development and consistent behaviour management. The school creates a calm, safe learning environment where pupils feel secure and recognised for their contributions. Teachers provide targeted support for struggling readers and are increasingly adapting teaching for pupils with additional needs.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils are achieving more highly in their qualifications and feel better prepared for next steps
  • School culture promotes good behaviour with consistent policy implementation, resulting in fewer incidents of poor behaviour
  • Well-organised, ambitious curriculum now in place with increased access to English Baccalaureate qualifications
  • Effective support for pupils who find reading challenging, with improved reading fluency and confidence
  • Strong preparation for adult life including careers fairs, work experience, and teaching about keeping safe and healthy

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum teaching methods are not always adapted to meet individual pupils' needs and starting points, limiting depth of understanding
  • Classroom assessment does not accurately identify what pupils know, preventing teachers from addressing gaps or moving advanced learners on quickly enough
  • Attendance remains below the national average, though the school is working to improve this

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with the school creating an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Journalling, strategy games, tutor group MP roles, sports leaders, careers fairs, work experience placements

Honiton Community College has made significant improvements since its previous inspection, raising ambition and pupil achievement with support from the Ted Wragg Multi Academy Trust. The school is rated Good across all key areas - quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
