Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Holmes Chapel is a caring, inclusive school where pupils feel safe and build good relationships with staff. Teachers are knowledgeable about their subjects, and the school is particularly strong at supporting pupils with SEND and those with weak reading skills. Students in the sixth form are proud to be part of the community and set a good example with their mature attitudes.

Key Strengths

  • Broad and ambitious curriculum with clear essential knowledge mapped out for each subject
  • Staff well-trained to support pupils with SEND, enabling them to progress through ambitious subject curriculums
  • Strong systems for identifying and supporting pupils with weak reading skills
  • Improved attendance over the past two years through dedicated pastoral support
  • Well-planned personal development programme covering relationships, sex education, and careers guidance

Areas for Improvement

  • Some teachers in a small number of subjects at key stages 3 and 4 do not consistently use effective strategies to help pupils understand subject content, leading to gaps in knowledge
  • In a few subjects, teachers do not routinely check pupils' understanding well enough, meaning misconceptions go unchecked and some pupils develop gaps in learning, particularly disadvantaged pupils

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school creating an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

School library, picnic benches for social time, sixth-form study and social areas, assemblies with visiting speakers, personal development lessons, school visits

Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School has maintained the standards identified at its previous inspection. The school is an inclusive community where pupils feel safe and achieve well in public examinations.
