What This School Does Well
The school has a broad, interesting curriculum that goes beyond the classroom with regular trips and visits such as to Sikh temples and observatories. The early years provision is particularly strong, with children making excellent progress. Pupils develop confidence and enthusiasm for learning, especially through a rich range of music, art, sport and cultural activities.
Key Strengths
- Early years provision is good with children making consistently strong progress and being well prepared for key stage 1
- Phonics is taught well with all pupils achieving the expected standard in Year 1
- Pupils are confident, enthusiastic learners who participate enthusiastically in music, art and performance activities
- The school has a broad curriculum with rich enrichment opportunities
- Safeguarding arrangements are effective with a strong culture of promoting pupils' safety and welfare
Areas for Improvement
- Progress in reading, writing and mathematics, especially in key stage 2, is not strong enough
- Teaching is too variable and does not consistently challenge pupils, particularly the most able
- Standards of writing in Years 3 to 6 are low compared to age-expected levels
- Feedback pupils receive does not always help them take the next step in their learning
- Governors lack knowledge about teaching quality and pupil progress and have not challenged leaders robustly enough
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective with a strong embedded culture of promoting pupils' safety and welfare, timely action when concerns arise, and proactive support provided to pupils and families.
Extracurricular Activities
Music activities, art and performance activities, PE and sport competitions, lunchtime and after-school clubs, educational visits (Sikh temple, Museum of Science and Industry, Jodrell Bank Observatory), French lessons at partner secondary school, master classes for most able pupils
Holme Junior and Infant School requires improvement overall. While the recently appointed interim headteacher has a clear vision for improvement, leaders and governors have not ensured strong progress in reading, writing and mathematics, particularly in key stage 2.
