What This School Does Well
Hillside Junior School creates a happy, respectful community where children feel safe and enjoy learning. The school offers a broad, ambitious curriculum and plenty of enrichment activities. However, parents should be aware that the school needs to do better at supporting children with additional needs and those learning English as a second language.
Key Strengths
- Pupils feel happy, safe and cared for, with good behaviour and respectful attitudes toward each other
- Well-designed curriculum that is ambitious and broad across all subjects
- Strong personal development programme including visits to culturally important places like the Houses of Parliament
- Good support for parents with resources in multiple languages to help with homework
Areas for Improvement
- Pupils with SEND and those learning English as an additional language do not receive enough tailored support
- Assessment information is not used consistently to identify and quickly fix gaps in pupils' understanding
- Reading support for pupils struggling with phonics is not effective enough
- Leadership does not monitor closely enough how well the curriculum is working for all pupils, especially the most vulnerable
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils knowing how to raise concerns through trusted adults and worry boxes.
Extracurricular Activities
Fencing, rock band, Spanish, school council, well-being ambassadors, team leader roles, after-school clubs
Hillside Junior School is a friendly, safe place where pupils enjoy learning and show good behaviour. However, the quality of education requires improvement because some vulnerable pupils, including those with special needs and English language learners, are not getting the support they need.
