What This School Does Well
Heyes Lane Primary School excels at creating a happy, safe learning environment where pupils feel cared for and engaged. The school provides excellent teaching across all year groups with strong support for children who need it, and enriches learning through a wide range of visits, visitors and activities. Parents consistently praise the staff for going 'above and beyond' and children are proud to attend.
Key Strengths
- Strong mathematics improvement with above-average attainment in 2016 key stage 2 tests, with all pupil groups making expected progress
- Highly effective phonics teaching with very high proportions of Year 1 pupils reaching the expected standard, including disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs
- Well-organised early years provision with children progressing well and above-average proportions reaching good level of development by end of Reception
- Calm and orderly school environment with exceptionally positive behaviour, backed by consistent rewards and sanctions
- Quality teaching across all key stages with strong staff deployment and expert support for developing teachers
Areas for Improvement
- Writing standards fell in 2016 key stage 2 assessments - the school is now focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar, though improvements are still being embedded
- Progress in reading for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities was weak in 2016; a new intervention programme started but long-term impact not yet confirmed
- Disadvantaged pupils' progress remains slower than other pupils nationally and in the school, with lower proportions attaining highest standards
- Special educational needs coordinator's assessment information is not fully collated and evaluated to give comprehensive view of pupil progress
- Low attendance and high persistent absence among disadvantaged pupils over recent years
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective. The school has a strong safeguarding culture with rigorous staff checks, regular staff training, and comprehensive follow-up of concerns involving specialist services when needed.

Heyes Lane Primary School continues to be good. Under the leadership of Mrs Anne O'Sullivan since April 2015, the school has maintained good quality education and made significant improvements, particularly in mathematics and phonics teaching.
