Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

This school creates an exceptionally welcoming environment where children feel proud and excited to learn. The school has high ambitions for every child, including those with additional needs, and provides outstanding support to help them succeed. Staff are relentless in delivering high-quality teaching and rich learning experiences that help pupils leave Year 2 with strong knowledge and important life skills.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding behaviour and personal development with pupils showing impressive responsibility and independence from an early age - Outstanding early years provision where children develop a love and curiosity for learning - Excellent support for pupils with special educational needs through a well-thought-through three-pathway approach - Strong focus on reading with consistent phonics teaching that helps pupils become fluent readers quickly - High-quality curriculum that is ambitious and broad, with careful consideration of what pupils learn and in what order

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, teaching does not build securely enough on what pupils already know, meaning some pupils' ability to practise and apply their learning is not as secure - Governors sometimes over-rely on the school to inform them and do not always challenge and hold the school to account as effectively as they could

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils learning about risks both online and in the environment and knowing how to keep themselves and others safe.

Herringthorpe Infant School is a welcoming and caring school where pupils thrive and are incredibly proud to attend. The school has high ambitions for all pupils, including those with special educational needs, and delivers a rich, well-rounded curriculum.
