What This School Does Well

Havelock Primary is a caring, inclusive school where children feel happy and safe. Teachers provide consistently good quality teaching that helps most pupils make strong progress in reading, writing and maths. The school does excellent work developing pupils' character and understanding of values like resilience, reflection and building good relationships, preparing them well to be responsible citizens.

Key Strengths

  • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is consistently good across the school
  • Strong spiritual, moral, social and cultural development - pupils are well prepared as citizens of modern Britain
  • Pupils are well-behaved, respectful, courteous and feel safe at school
  • Mathematics teaching is a particular strength with pupils developing secure understanding of number
  • Effective safeguarding arrangements with regular workshops for parents on safety matters

Areas for Improvement

  • Early years provision - children do not make sufficiently strong progress and are not well prepared for Year 1
  • Some learning activities lack sufficient challenge, particularly in science and humanities
  • Teachers' expectations for most able pupils in writing are not consistently high enough
  • Pupils do not always apply their writing skills well across different subjects
  • Presentation of pupils' work could be neater

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with strong procedures in place, regular staff training, appropriate vetting of staff and volunteers, and regular workshops for parents on safety matters including online safety and protection issues.

Extracurricular Activities

Educational trips, after-school clubs, sporting competitions (tennis, football, dodgeball), daily running programme, school council, green ambassadors

Havelock Primary School and Nursery is a good school where the headteacher and leaders ensure pupils receive quality education and make strong progress in reading, writing and mathematics. However, the early years provision requires improvement as children do not make sufficiently strong progress from their starting points.
