Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's November 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

This is a genuinely happy school where your child will be welcomed and well cared for. Staff are kind and caring, behaviour is excellent, and children know the school values. The school is working hard to improve teaching and learning, with particular strength in reading and early years, plus plenty of activities to develop your child as a whole person including sports, music and links with local services.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on teaching reading using phonics, with pupils' reading skills strengthening across the school
  • Happy, well-behaved pupils with excellent relationships with staff and clear understanding of school values
  • Early years provision is good, with children developing independence, resilience and strong language skills
  • Good personal development with many sporting opportunities and connections with local community groups and services
  • Effective safeguarding arrangements with pupils knowing they can talk to trusted adults about worries

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils' academic achievement is variable and particularly low in mathematics and writing
  • Staff are not identifying and addressing gaps in pupils' knowledge and misconceptions effectively
  • Curriculum delivery has weak task design, meaning pupils struggle to achieve learning intentions
  • Some older pupils needing extra help do not have access to reading books at the right level
  • School has not yet fully evaluated the impact of recent curriculum changes

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with clear processes in place and pupils confident they can talk to trusted adults about any worries.

Extracurricular Activities

Fencing, family bike-riding sessions, cricket festival, chess, card games, sporting activities, interactions with local church, secondary schools, lifeboat and fire services

Haselworth Primary School is a happy, welcoming school where pupils have strong relationships with caring staff and behave well. However, the quality of education requires improvement, with particularly low achievement in mathematics and writing due to recent leadership instability, though a settled staff team is now driving necessary changes.
