What This School Does Well

Hartland Primary is a caring school where every child matters. Staff work hard to support each child's learning and emotional well-being, with pupils enjoying coming to school and behaving well. Parents particularly value the positive environment and the thoughtful pastoral support offered, such as the Calm Club for pupils who need peace and quiet.

Key Strengths

  • Early reading is taught well with most pupils learning to read fluently and with enjoyment -
  • All pupils, including those with SEND, learn well with carefully structured lessons that help knowledge build over time -
  • Pupils have excellent behaviour and feel safe, with bullying being rare and staff taking concerns seriously -
  • Personal development is carefully designed, helping pupils understand friendship, citizenship and respect for difference -
  • School prioritises attendance with leaders acting swiftly to support families, leading to improvements over time

Areas for Improvement

  • Key knowledge for early writing has not been clearly identified, meaning some pupils struggle to learn how to write simple sentences and spell accurately -
  • Some assessment procedures for subjects are time-consuming and have little impact on pupils' learning -
  • Teaching of early writing does not prioritise the most important knowledge or consistently check pupils' understanding in the way that reading does

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Calm Club (lunchtime emotional support), breakfast club, after-school provision

Hartland Primary School has successfully maintained its good standards from the previous inspection. Staff care deeply about pupils' education and well-being, creating an ambitious curriculum that supports both academic and personal development.
