What This School Does Well

Gildersome creates a warm, welcoming environment where children thrive emotionally and feel genuinely cared for by staff. The early years provision is particularly strong, with children developing important skills through carefully designed activities. Most pupils progress well through the school and leave ready for their next steps, with strong support in place for those with additional needs.

Key Strengths

  • Strong early years provision with excellent relationships between staff and children
  • Most pupils reach national levels of learning by end of key stage 2
  • Pupils with SEND are well supported and make secure progress
  • Positive behaviour and clear expectations create a happy, respectful school environment
  • Effective pastoral support and strong parent relationships

Areas for Improvement

  • High rates of frequent absence among disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND - not reducing sufficiently
  • Inconsistent teaching quality and varying implementation of curriculum across the school
  • Some pupils have not secured basic skills in reading and writing - catch-up support is at early stages
  • Pupil premium strategy not well understood by staff, limiting its impact
  • Insufficient oversight of school improvements and evaluation of their impact

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Baking club, football club, chess club, reading ambassadors, playground leaders, school choir performances at local care home

Gildersome Primary School is a caring, nurturing environment where most pupils achieve well and feel safe. However, the school needs to improve attendance for vulnerable pupils, teaching consistency, and support for disadvantaged learners.
