What This School Does Well

The school has made good progress in supporting its teachers, especially newly qualified staff, through dedicated mentoring and coaching. Pupil tracking systems are being used effectively to identify which children need extra help, and this is starting to raise achievement across the school. The leadership team has been restructured to give leaders more time to focus on improving teaching quality.

Key Strengths

  • Improved pupil achievement and progress rates through careful tracking of individuals and groups
  • Strong support for newly qualified and inexperienced teachers through mentoring and coaching by senior leaders
  • Good governance with governors providing high levels of support and challenge to school leaders
  • Reading standards have improved across the school
  • Clear roles and responsibilities helping to reduce staff turnover

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils need more opportunities for extended writing to develop their writing skills
  • Standards of writing have not improved at the same rate as reading
  • Need to establish clearer methods for assessing teaching quality over time to accurately track improvements
  • Inconsistencies in standards still remain across different year groups and subjects

Fryent Primary School was judged to require improvement and has been undergoing monitoring inspections since November 2012. Senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to address the identified areas for improvement.
