What This School Does Well

Fortitude School excels at creating a caring, inclusive environment where pupils with previous negative school experiences feel safe and valued. The therapeutic farm-based learning is particularly strong, helping pupils develop life skills, empathy and confidence while managing their behaviour exceptionally well. The school's commitment to each pupil's individual needs and their place in the community prepares them well for life beyond school.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent behaviour and relationships - pupils are polite, build strong friendships, and behave exceptionally well at the farm
  • Therapeutic farm-based learning is highly effective at developing life skills, empathy and confidence
  • Strong focus on communication, emotion management and personal development through community links and activities
  • Staff successfully support pupils to settle into school after negative previous experiences
  • Warm, caring relationships between staff and pupils with genuine commitment to their wellbeing

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum does not clearly set out what pupils should learn, so activities don't always match learning goals effectively
  • Assessment of pupils' knowledge and understanding is not yet secure enough to accurately match teaching to their needs
  • School information systems are not sharp enough to clearly identify what is working well and what needs to improve

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Farm activities (caring for chickens and donkeys, tent-building), sensory garden, community litter picking, zoo trips, local library visits, museum visits, allotment activities, cooking, life skills classes

Fortitude School is a warm, welcoming and inclusive special school at the beginning of its journey that serves pupils with social, emotional and health needs. The school believes every pupil can succeed and is starting to realise this through its therapeutic curriculum based at a working farm.
