What This School Does Well
Filey Academy is making meaningful progress in supporting all learners, particularly those with special educational needs who are now thriving and fully engaged in school life. The school has created a more respectful environment by significantly reducing bullying and discriminatory language, while equipping pupils with practical guidance for their futures through partnerships with local businesses and further education providers. Staff are committed to improvement, and the school's revised curriculum sets clear expectations for what pupils should learn.
Key Strengths
- Support for pupils with SEND has improved significantly, with staff receiving specialist training and previously struggling pupils now fully involved in school life
- Curriculum has been thoughtfully revised with clear identification of important knowledge and skills
- Bullying and discriminatory language have reduced considerably, and pupils contribute constructively through charity work and leadership opportunities
- Careers advice and guidance inspire pupils for their futures with visits to further education settings and input from local businesses
- Reading support is improving with specialist staff now leading extra sessions
Areas for Improvement
- Teaching does not consistently check that pupils understand new knowledge before moving on to new learning, causing some pupils to fall behind
- Persistent absence rates remain too high, particularly for vulnerable pupil groups, despite recent improvements
- Behaviour management systems are not effective enough, with incidents of poor behaviour and suspensions still disrupting lessons
- Pupils lack in-depth knowledge of other faiths, cultures and British values because the personal development curriculum is not well implemented
- Curriculum implementation is inconsistent across subjects, with some lessons not adapted to meet all pupils' needs
