Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Ewhurst is a warm, nurturing school where every child is known and valued as an individual. The school has made significant improvements in teaching reading and maths, with children becoming confident, fluent readers from Reception onwards. Pupils behave exceptionally well, are kind to one another, and have a strong sense of belonging to both the school and their local community.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent phonics teaching and reading development - pupils become fluent readers and love reading both in lessons and at home
  • Strong support for children with special educational needs who are identified early and fully included in school life
  • Ambitious, well-designed curriculum with effective teaching in most subjects
  • Consistently good behaviour, with pupils being kind and focused on learning
  • Close community bonds where staff, pupils and families work together supportively

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, checks on what pupils have previously learned are not rigorous enough, meaning pupils sometimes struggle to make connections between topics
  • School should ensure pupils' understanding of key knowledge and skills is secure before introducing new learning

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff listening and responding swiftly to any concerns raised by pupils.

Extracurricular Activities

Musical performances, meeting members of the local community, clubs for all pupils including those with special educational needs

Ewhurst CofE Aided Infant School has improved significantly since its previous inspection and now provides a good quality of education. Pupils feel safe, cared for and known as individuals, with strong behaviour and positive attitudes to learning.
